Ranking Van Morrison’s album closers 1967-1995

Approaching the Van Morrison of the eighties means distinguishing the not bad from the not good. His bog standard tunes register as dainty and not out of place, like an aromatic candle in a bathroom. But Morrison’s seventies provides ample space for his growl to stretch. “Almost Independence Day,” my pick among this breed, presents a Mellotron and lots of bullshit growls. Embracing it over “Slim Slow Slider” is like a western Pennsylvanian county loving Trump.
