This thing is getting stronger and stronger: The best of Róisín Murphy

The most ambitious of dance pop artists, a master of the locked groove the Irish-born former singer of Moloko frustrates as often as she exhilarates. After recording Overpowered, by any definition a classic, she released two follow-ups whose slower tempos hobbled her melodic instincts as well as they demonstrated her attention to detail. Last year’s Róisín Machine might be her idea of a sop; if so, more, please. Her appetites and curiosity are one. “When she memorializes a Narcissus, it’s clear she admires his self-love. No folkie has tried that trick,” I wrote last year.
