Modernity has failed us: The best of The 1975

The most uneven, frustrating white pop band this half decade, The 1975 released an uneven, frustrating album today, their best. To the naysayers, I hear you; I recoil from the enthusiasm of their partisans. When Matt Healy and his crew rock, though, he joins K Michelle, Kehlani, and Ezra Koenig, to name three, among singer-songwriters defining a space I recognize.

1. If You’re Too Shy (Let Me Know)
2. It’s Not Living (If It’s Not With You)
3. Somebody Else
4. Love It If We Made It
5. She’s American
6. Chocolate
7. TooTimeTooTimeTooTime
8. Looking For Somebody to Love
9. The Sound
10. How to Draw/Petrichor
11. UGH!
12. The Birthday Party
13. Love Me
14. Be My Mistake
15. I Think There’s Something You Should Know
17. Change of Heart
18. People
19. The City
20. Jesus Christ 2005 God Bless America

  1. Lovely list, but is it fair to call them frustrating? Their highs are so special, what good would do them being less uneven?
