The best films of 2018, first half report

Although in years past I’ve watched plenty of good films before July – Strangers by the Lake and The Lost City of Z, my favorite films of 2014 and 2017, respectively, came out way early in the release cycle – 2018 has already been blessed with career-high work from Lucretia Martel, Paul Schrader, and Lynne Ramsay, and a flood of new material from Hoo Sang-soo.

Here in no order are the best films of 2018 to date.

1. Claire’s Camera (Hoo Sang-Soo)
2. Zama (Lucrecia Martel)
3. Let the Sunshine In (Claire Denis)
4. You Were Never Really Here (Lynne Ramsay)
5. Isle of Dogs (Wes Anderson)
6. Black Panther (Ryan Coogler)
7. Winter Brothers (Hlynur Pálmason)
8. The Rider (Chloé Zhao)
9. Annihilation (Alex Garland)
10. Sollers Point (Matthew Porterfield)
11. First Reformed (Paul Schrader)
