On Kanyegate

Unsurprisingly, Rich Juzwiak has the best response to Kanyegate. As much as I wanted to side with Taylor Swift, and as someone who until last night thought that Kanye’s arrogance was always more affected than real, I have to agree that these two clowns should really get a life:

The only difference is that she’s young enough for it not to be completely pathetic. Still, the entitlement was wafting off her as she strolled out from backstage (this, clearly was pre-meditated — props to Beyoncé for not being so invested as to need to blather about nothing after receiving something that means just as much, but don’t think for a second that you were watching spontaneous generosity). It was so ridiculous when, all put out, Taylor was like, “Maybe we could try this again…” and then launched into the same bland shit she was going to say when she actually won: “I would really like to thank Roman White, who directed my video…” You know what, if you love your fucking Moon Man so much, why not write a song about him?

Indeed. The, “where is Taylor?” as she makes her way from backstage with a microphone already in hand, wearing the same shade of rose as Beyonce. It was a PR masterpiece.

I wouldn’t go so far as to say it was planned, but from her industry bonafides to her Hollywood smile Swift already looks like one of those award show mainstays, like Alicia Keys (and I like Swift a lot).

i still don’t understand this strenuous insistence on the stupidity of the VMAs as one rewinds the last two minutes to make sure nothing was missed. like, are these the same people who kept confiding in me in 2004 about how they watched “newlyweds”, and without being asked for a defense immediately adding “don’t worry, i only watch it because she’s so stupid”?

taylor swift’s a teenage girl happier than is precisely proportionate to win an award; kanye’s a weird dude with arcane emotional problems; and Oh Shit The MTV Video Music Awards Are Totally Meaningless You Say? electricity was expended to transmit this insight. the globe warmed.
