Singles 3/23

“Buzzkill” kept going this week like a Jaeger shot before leaving the bar. Luke Bryan’s was one of the few singles in recent months I’ve promoted after an initial tepid response, which is what Ashley Monroe’s “Like a Rose” got from the Jukeboxers, surprisingly. A compelling Romanian rapper ranked third on my tally.

Amnesty Week means a lot of good singles we missed earlier this year get reexamined, and while I am less apt to award 8’s and 9’s than my colleagues you can see I I loved five enough to award them grades commensurate with their achievement. For those who wonder, I award those 8’s and 9’s to singles I want to hear immediately after they’re over; singles I can hear at any point in the day and never dream of skipping. Some years have more of these than others.

Singles 12/7

The last time I awarded this many 7’s in one week the Dow was over 13,000, so as The Singles Jukebox eases into the final weeks of the year and Amnesty Week expect to see a few surprises, like my loving the generic crap on which Clarkson-Gill sing as if the ensuing decades after the seventies were nightmares from which the rest of us have awakened. Terrific CMA performance too.

Apologies to Kendrick Lamar, but Angel Haze’s Reservation mixtape is the year’s most exciting hip-hop release. If you haven’t heard “Werkin’ Girls” or “New York” or “Hot Like Fire,” find them.

Miguel wins this easily, although it’s my least favorite of the leaked tracks and singles he’s released since last spring. Same goes for “Compton,” a mediocrity on one of the year’s best albums. The record most deserving of replay: “Merry Go ‘Round.”

Singles 10/12

A couple days ago I clarified my ambivalence towards “Southern Comfort Zone,” an ambivalence that stems in part from the recognition that liberals who sneer at country as red state music tend to regard Brad Paisley as their boy (he’s even got a New Yorker profile!).

Looking further down, it’s a nineties reunion: Dave Matthews, Prince, and Soundgarden.
