Singles 11/18

Thanks to Latin Grammys and serendipity, this was among the year’s best weeks. I still don’t hear the country overtones in “A-Yo.” Maybe they’re undertones.

Singles 11/11

Blurbing was cut short this week. Brad Paisley’s anthem has the feel of a rose pressed inside a family Bible. We’ll return in force next week with Latin Grammys and a Leonard Cohen tribute. Stay close.

Singles 10/28

Californian-Chilean electro-pop, insinuating house, a decent Jason Derulo rip, and, at the top, snotty canon-pillaging hip-hip — now that’s a good week.

Notes:

– “Cranes in the Sky” is our highest rated single of 2016 and highest rated Solange single to date, scoring a full decimal point better than 2012’s “Losing You.”

– Two aging pretty boys and one decent boy distinguished Friday. It’s possible that I underrated Niall’s single because it went in — wait for it — one direction.

Singles 10/14

NOTES:

– If someone had told me in 2013 that my colleagues would like a Brandy Clark less than I did, I’d have been more surprised than if told my past self that I was voting for Hillary.

– This solid Vince Staples track isn’t even the best on an EP whose strengths have not been loudly celebrated.

Singles 10/7

Notes:

– The marketing of Nick Jonas a multigenre threat in the Timberlake tradition keeps stalling thanks to his choice in shitty material.

– The unfairly maligned Rebecca Black releases a better single than the more-okay-than-you-remembered “Friday.”

– You gotta hear what Kings of Leon thinks it’s getting away with. It reminds me of Paul Simon going new wave three years too late on this album sleeve.
