Singles 3/26

The blah-est week in months — check out the middling scores. The stunt casting of Megan + Dua Lipa and the incongruous pairing of Camila Cabello + Ed Sheeran (she’s there to provide Latin heat, that remunerative cliche) didn’t get my heart racing, nor did the two Gs. I’m glad we got to Cody Johnson; now that “Til You Can’t” is a hit it’s worth explaining why it’s so. I suspect its reassuring message, sung with enthusiasm without quite redeeming its treacly origins, reached the audience hungering for another “Humble and Kind” even if they don’t remember Tim McGraw’s superior 2016 hit.
