The best songs produced by Butch Vig

Blame contrarianism, readers, if you like, for my placing the lead single from Garbage’s second and best album at the top of this list; but it took almost seven years of mixing to get the correct aural varnish that made guitars glisten like Trans-Ams in Miami sunshine. I do realize I cheated: Butch Vig drummed for Garbage, an act comprising several ne’er-do-wells and not-to-be’s who counted on Vig’s ability to fill corners for the sake of an album released during so-called alternative rock’s nadir as a sonic force, never mind (heh) cultural.

1. Garbage – Push It
2. Nirvana – Lithium
3. Against Me! – I Was A Teenage Anarchist
4. Smashing Pumpkins – Cherub Rock
5. Freedy Johnston – Bad Reputation
6. L7 – Slide
7. Die Kreuzen – Big Bad Days
8. Nirvana – Smells Like Teen Spirit
9. Soul Asylum – Just Like Anyone
10. Sonic Youth – Theresa’s Sound-World

  1. Love number 5. Prolly my fav melody in the whole bunch. Did you select it for representing a kind of sound in indie pop/folk that would dominate the decade? .It’s a left-pick choice for a quasi acoustic track.

I’ll throw a bone to “Come As You Are” here. Stolen riff be damned, the acuatic layer Vig provides with the echo-y guitars mirrors to me Nevermind’s album cover better than most songs here do to theirs. That’s quite an achievement sadly underselled by the Killing Joke brouhaha.
