The Comey hearings: Soto’s on it

I’m keeping this live blogging as loose as my belt. James Comey supplied tomorrow’s pullquote: “I kept a record of my conversations with the president because I thought he might lie about it.”

12:38 p.m. Rachel Maddow on Twitter: “I think what Sen McCain is saying is that FBI should investigate if Hillary Clinton colluded with the Russians to hurt her own campaign. OK.”

12:33 p.m. Now John McCain, querulous, brings the Cornyn hint out in the open: why did you close one investigation (i.e. emails) but continue in another (Russian involvement in election). He looks sour and old. I’m not sure if he knows where he is. The Clinton email investigation ended because the FBI found not further evidence suggesting a crime had been committed. Meanwhile the Russia investigation continues because…it’s not over. What’s so hard to understand? Besides, McCain should be happy – his guy won thanks to Comey’s meddling! Comey: “I’ve had a lot of conversations with humans over the years.”

12:27 p.m. Comey: “If there’s an explanation” for why he was fired other than for investigating Russa “I don’t buy it.”

12:25 p.m. John Cornyn hints — he never asks — why Comey felt a need to correct the record about Hillary Clinton in October 2016 but didn’t do the same with Trump re Russia investigation.

11:50 a.m. Lunch break!

11:47 a.m. Conservative line so far: this looks worse for Sessions and Flynn than Trump.

11:42 a.m. Comey “had to break a date” with his wife to meet Trump at White House. In retrospect, he says, he wishes he had gone out with his wife instead.

11:40 a.m. The Russians “will be back” to hacking elections.

11:38 a.m. Blunt: “Why did you keep taking [Trump’s] phone calls?” Uh. Why do Missourians keep electing this bag of dead fish?

11:34 a.m. “If you hadn’t worn a red tie, would you have worn a tie at all?”

11:34 a.m. Roy Blunt’s opening question “if the president had not terminated your service, would you still be the head of the FBI?”

11:27 a.m. Comey inclined to take notes after speaking to Trump because of “The nature of the person you’re dealing with.” Not subtle shade being thrown.
