As I held my breath, the world stood still: The best of ABBA

By now critics have written volumes on the hysteria coursing through some of the best-selling singles ever released, so I won’t linger. Suffice it to say that I prefer the relentless forward motion of their disco-tinged singles (Jane Wyman in her Douglas Sirk phase fiercely smiling in an effort to hold it together) and the grandness of their ballads, notably when they abjured cuteness (yes to “The Winner Takes It All,” no to “Chiquitita”).
