Best singles of 2016

I’m gonna make it through this year if it kills me. So many friends have muttered John Darnielle’s line since the the death of David Bowie augured an unusually brutal year, culminating, of course, in the debacle on November 8. Up until that point, I must say, 2016 had been excellent for me: professionally, aesthetically, sexually. I watched more movies, read more books, and listened to more music than ever, to the point that Wallace Stevens’ poem about a clear day and no memories addressed a longing too soon suppressed.

I kept returning to an electro-pop single reviewed last spring by a Chilean singer-songwriter who like so many predecessors found liberation in letting the music play, thump for thump. Threatened by hellfire, alienated from family, Alex Anwandter closes his eyes and wishes for Friday every day; the wish is all he he’s got, for Fridays end. They always do. After the Pulse shootings in Orlando, 2016’s most personal gut wrencher, I can’t have enough songs about dancing for dancing. And I cling to what I wrote then: “The opposite of fiction isn’t “reality” — it’s “falsehood.” Fiction refreshes life.” By last weekend Anohni’s “Drone Bomb Me” and Martin Solveig and Tkay Maidza’s “Do It Right” seemed prophetic, Maxwell’s “Lake by the Ocean” and Solange’s “Cranes in the Sky” soothing, and Tim McGraw’s “Humble and Kind” a faded reminder, like a shopping list used as a bookmark.
