Keep your hat on, boy: Best of 1993

David Jude Jolicoeur aka Trugoy (from left), Vincent Mason aka P.A. Mase and Kelvin Mercer aka Posdnuos pose for a portrait outside the Apollo Theater in Harlem in September 1993

1993 had several milestones: the best albums that U2, Suede, De La Soul, and Terence Trent D’Arby would ever record; peak material from Janet Jackson, Kate Bush, Pet Shop Boys, and Nirvana; and excellent debuts by Belly, the Auteurs, and Liz Phair. Bryan Ferry’s covers album, the first of many he would record when he entered a fallow songwriting period, turned out to be a spare, slivery collection that proved the ideal introduction to Street Life: 20 Great Hits, which I purchased a week later and kicked off the biggest musical influence of my adult life.
