Miguel – Wild
The one called “Coffee” depends on breathless expectations (“Pillow talk turns into sweet dreams/Sweet dreams turn into coffee in the morning”) and a churning electronic base that’s like a water bed rumbling under a couple in heat. “Hollywood Dreams” boasts fuzzy minor key guitar and an incoherent lyric about palm trees and numbness as the star, “still waiting for a big break,” reminds his beloved that they need to take Bowie seriously (“We can be heroes”). Speaking of influences and guitars, I can swear I hear a Tom Ze tuning on “NWA” behind his falsetto and Kurupt. After eighteen months of co-writes, appearances, and collaborations, his instinct for the come-on remains undiminished; he still doesn’t see the fun in forever. In short, nothing great, but a splendid amuse-bouche.
