Is there a certain reason why you have to be so negative: best singles of 1987

Freestyle ruled South Florida in 1987. I doubt a single Miamian would deny Company B the honor of recording the song of the year. It was everywhere: at carnivals, pumping out of cars, boom boxes, pool parties, . The runners-up would include Noel’s “Silent Morning,” a mournful morning-after that no less than Dave Marsh included in The Heart of Rock and Soul: The 1001 Greatest Singles Ever Made and called an oblique nod to AIDS; Cover Girls’ “Show Me; Will to Power’s first radio smash “Dreamin'”; and a regional hit called “Jealous Fellas” that had all the girls in eighth grade rewinding over and over so they could transcribe its lyrics. New Order’s “True Faith” and the Bangles’ fantastic Simon & Garfunkel cover were welcome changes of pace.

A shout-out to Thomas for introducing me to the remix of “The Pleasure Principle,” the only way I can hear the song these days.
