With each listen Solange Knowles’ “Losing You” sounds more remarkable. Keyed to a sampled scream evoking “It Takes Two,” a house beat, and a thick brooding orchestral synth line that sounds like the “Twin Peaks” theme, it amalgamates textures from two sonically discrete decades in music, and give Solange the credit for holding it together. Her wobbly pitch, best served in vowels ending in “e” or “y,” borrows from Madonna’s late early nineties balladeering — an influence that I expect will grow as producers exhaust the eighties for referents. More “Bad Girl,” less “Borderline”!
